TikTok Hit with Record €350M Fine by Ireland for Unlawful Data Transfers to China

TikTok Penalized for GDPR Violations

In a landmark decision, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has slapped TikTok with a hefty €350 million fine. The penalty comes after an investigation revealed that the popular social media platform unlawfully transferred European users' data to China, breaching the EU's stringent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Strict Compliance Measures Enforced

The DPC has given TikTok a six-month ultimatum to align its data handling practices with GDPR standards. Failure to comply will result in the immediate cessation of data flows to China, a move that underscores the EU's commitment to safeguarding user privacy.

Official Statement from DPC

"TikTok’s personal data transfers to China infringed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) because TikTok failed to verify, guarantee and demonstrate that the personal data of EEA users, remotely accessed by staff in China, was afforded a level of protection essentially equivalent to that guaranteed within the EU," stated DPC deputy commissioner Graham Doyle.
