Zoox's Strategic Move in the Bay Area

Amazon Inc.'s pioneering robotaxi division, Zoox, is gearing up for a significant production increase of its autonomous vehicles. With plans to inaugurate a new facility in California's Bay Area next year, Zoox is setting the stage for an ambitious expansion. Jesse Levinson, the startup's co-founder and Chief Technical Officer, shared insights with the Financial Times, highlighting the company's vision for the future.

Expanding the Robotaxi Fleet

Following successful tests in six US cities, Zoox is ready to broaden its horizons. The company aims to transition from limited testing to public rides, starting in Las Vegas this year, followed by San Francisco. Levinson emphasized the strategic advantage of California manufacturing, noting the potential to produce "hundreds and then thousands" of custom-built robotaxis. "Next year marks the beginning of what we term serial production," he stated, underscoring the company's commitment to scaling up.

A Competitive Edge Amid Global Rivalry

This expansion comes at a pivotal time, as the US seeks to bolster its position in the autonomous vehicle sector. With Chinese competitors like BYD applying pressure, Zoox's move is a direct response to the evolving landscape.
