India's Competitive Edge in Smartphone Manufacturing

Following US President Donald Trump's remarks advising Apple CEO Tim Cook against manufacturing in India, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal confidently stated that India has emerged as a competitive global hub for smartphone production. Companies, according to Barthwal, will base their manufacturing decisions on competitive advantages, with India standing out as a prime location.

Apple's Manufacturing Footprint in India

Despite Trump's comments, Apple has significantly expanded its manufacturing operations in India, assembling iPhones in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka through partnerships with Foxconn and Tata Group. This move underscores India's growing importance in the global tech manufacturing landscape.

Trade Deal Negotiations Continue

Barthwal also addressed Trump's claim about a zero-tariff trade deal between India and the US, stating that negotiations are ongoing and no final agreement has been reached. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the complexity of the discussions.

Despite the political rhetoric, Barthwal indicated that bilateral trade negotiations with the US are advancing positively, with a team set to engage in further discussions in the US. Trump had previously mentioned that both countries were working towards a trade agreement focused on creating jobs and building durable supply chains.
