Rising Costs of Home-Cooked Meals in June
The cost of preparing a home-cooked meal saw a noticeable increase in June, primarily due to a sharp rise in tomato prices, as highlighted in a recent Crisil report.
Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian Thalis Get Pricier
According to the 'Roti, Rice, Rate' report, the price of a vegetarian thali rose to Rs 27.1, marking a 3% increase from May. Similarly, non-vegetarian thalis became 4% more expensive, costing Rs 54.8.

Key Contributors to the Price Surge
A significant 36% jump in tomato prices, caused by an 8% drop in arrivals, was the main driver behind the overall increase. Potatoes and broiler prices also contributed, rising by 4% and 5% respectively.
Future Outlook
Pushan Sharma from Crisil anticipates further price hikes in the near term, citing seasonal factors affecting vegetable prices. Onion and tomato prices are expected to remain high due to limited supply and poor summer sowing.
Year-on-Year Comparison
Despite the monthly increase, thali prices were actually lower compared to June 2024, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis costing 8% and 6% less respectively.
