IPL's Stunning Growth: Business Value Soars to $18.5 Billion, Brand Value Hits $4 Billion

IPL's Business and Brand Value Skyrocket

The Indian Premier League (IPL), cricket's most glamorous annual event, has witnessed an impressive 13% increase in its business value, reaching a staggering $18.5 billion (approximately Rs 1.6 lakh crore). Simultaneously, its brand value has surged by 14% to nearly $4 billion (about Rs 33,000 crore), according to a report by Houlihan Lokey, a NYSE-listed investment bank known for valuing sports franchises globally.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Leads in Brand Value

In a landmark achievement, the 2025 IPL champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), have emerged as the top brand among the ten competing teams, with a brand value of $269 million. They are closely followed by Mumbai Indians ($242 million), Chennai Super Kings ($235 million), and Kolkata Knight Riders ($227 million).

IPL: A Global Phenomenon

The report highlights IPL as a global phenomenon that blends sport, entertainment, and commerce, significantly impacting fan engagement and commercial models beyond the cricketing world. Its success has inspired the creation of short-format leagues worldwide, making it a pivotal part of modern popular culture.

Record Advertising Revenue and Viewership

Advertising revenue during the 2025 IPL skyrocketed by 50% to $600 million (about Rs 5,000 crore). The final match between RCB and Punjab Kings attracted over 678 million views, surpassing the viewership of the India-Pakistan clash in the ICC Championship earlier that year.

Superior Revenue Model

The IPL's revenue model is praised for its blend of predictable cash flows and cost discipline, outperforming leagues like the English Premier League and the NBA. With 80% of costs secured pre-tournament and a salary cap ensuring competitive parity, IPL stands as a high-growth compounder in the entertainment sector.
