India-US Trade Deal Under the Microscope
As India edges closer to finalizing a trade deal with the United States, officials are meticulously monitoring the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on various countries to gauge potential impacts.

India in 'Wait-and-Watch' Mode
Authorities have adopted a cautious approach, opting to wait and see the full effect of these tariffs before considering any contingency measures. "Today, on July 15, we are not in a position to guesstimate the differential tariff that is going to play out on August 1," an official remarked.
Negotiations Progressing Rapidly
Commerce Ministry officials are currently in the US for the fifth round of discussions on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA), with talks advancing at a "very fast pace," according to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
The aim is to finalize the initial phase of the BTA by September, amidst challenges in formulating a contingency strategy due to the unpredictable nature of the tariff adjustments.
Trump's Vision for Trade Deals
US President Donald Trump highlighted the benefits of recent trade agreements, including enhanced market access. "We're going to have access into India. You have to understand, we had no access to any of these countries," Trump stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of these deals.
