In a monumental gesture of corporate responsibility, Tata Sons has established a Rs 500 crore public charitable trust aimed at supporting the families affected by the tragic Air India 171 crash in Ahmedabad. This initiative marks one of the largest relief efforts undertaken by the House of Tatas.

Trust Details and Contributions

The newly formed AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, registered in Mumbai, will see Tata Sons contributing Rs 250 crore, with an additional Rs 250 crore matched by its primary shareholder, Tata Trusts. The trust will be managed by five trustees, including notable figures such as Tata Chemicals chairman S Padmanabhan and Tata Sons’ general counsel Sidharth Sharma.

Compensation and Support

Families of the deceased will receive Rs 1 crore compensation per victim, disbursed through the AI-171 Trust. Additionally, the trust will cover medical treatment for the injured and contribute to the reconstruction costs of the BJ Medical College hostel, showcasing Tata Sons' commitment to comprehensive support.

Previous Humanitarian Efforts

This initiative follows Tata Sons' legacy of philanthropy, including a Rs 1,500 crore contribution for Covid-19 relief in 2020 and the establishment of a trust for victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks by Indian Hotels in 2008.
