New Delhi
In a significant move to bolster the safety and quality standards of e-rickshaws and e-carts, the Indian government has announced mandatory audits of production facilities for all manufacturers. This initiative, set to take effect from April next year, aims to ensure that only manufacturers with proper facilities and quality control measures can produce these increasingly popular vehicles.

Stricter Regulations for Safer Vehicles
The road transport ministry has introduced draft notifications outlining these new requirements, following consultations with industry associations. "This request has come from the industry bodies," an official stated, highlighting the need for regulations as e-rickshaws become a staple in urban and rural connectivity.
Annual Fitness Certificates and Advanced Features
To further ensure safety, the validity of fitness certificates for these vehicles will be reduced from three years to one. Additionally, post-April 2027, all new vehicles must be equipped with lithium-ion batteries, windscreen wipers, and mechanisms to prevent speed alterations beyond the 25 kmph limit.
The Rise of E-Rickshaws in India
With over 16 lakh e-rickshaws registered in the past five years and more than 400 manufacturers currently operating, the sector is witnessing unprecedented growth. The new norms aim to eliminate substandard manufacturers and ensure the longevity and safety of these essential vehicles.
