Major Infrastructure Push for India's Railways
In a significant move to decongest the railway network and slash logistics costs, the Union Cabinet has approved four multi-tracking railway projects. These projects span 574 km across six states: Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
Boosting Operational Efficiency and Freight Capacity
The decision, made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to enhance operational efficiency, service reliability, and freight capacity on crucial rail routes. With an estimated cost of Rs 11,169 crore, the projects are set for completion by 2028-29.

Key Projects and Expected Benefits
Union Railways and I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that these projects will drastically improve mobility and reduce congestion on high-density corridors. The approved routes include significant expansions such as the Itarsi–Nagpur fourth line and the Aurangabad–Parbhani doubling, among others.
Employment and Environmental Impact: The construction phase is expected to generate direct employment for nearly 229 lakh human-days. Additionally, the initiative aligns with India's climate goals, projecting a substantial reduction in oil imports and CO2 emissions.
Seamless Connectivity and Economic Opportunities
The government emphasizes that these projects will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services, benefiting around 2,309 villages and a population of 43.6 lakh with improved access and economic opportunities.
