India's Russian Oil Purchases: A Growing Concern for US-India Relations
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON: India's increasing reliance on Russian oil is not only meeting its vast energy needs but also inadvertently supporting Moscow's military efforts in Ukraine, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This development has become a significant point of contention in the otherwise strategic partnership between India and the United States.

In a candid interview with Fox Radio, Rubio expressed understanding towards India's energy requirements, stating, "India has huge energy needs... and it buys from Russia because Russian oil is sanctioned and cheap." However, he emphasized the unintended consequences of these purchases: "Unfortunately, that is helping to sustain the Russian war effort."
Despite these tensions, Rubio highlighted the multifaceted nature of US-India relations, noting, "We also have many other points of cooperation with them." Yet, the frustration within the US administration is palpable, as India's continued purchases from Russia undermine efforts to isolate Moscow economically.
The situation underscores the delicate balance between national energy security and international diplomacy, as India navigates its relationships with both Washington and Moscow amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
