Road Minister Proposes Significant Penalty Increases for Uninsured Vehicles to Enhance Road Safety

New Delhi: A Bold Move for Road Safety

In an effort to clarify the confusion surrounding speed limits and enhance road safety, the road transport ministry has put forward a proposal. The Centre would set speed limits for National Highways (NHs) and expressways, while states would have the authority to determine limits for state highways and other roads.

Steep Penalties for Uninsured Vehicles

The ministry has also suggested imposing hefty penalties on uninsured vehicles. First-time offenders would be required to pay three times the insurance premium, with repeat offenders facing five times the premium. This initiative aims to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on the road and ensure better compliance.

Streamlining Regulations and Testing

Additional proposals include setting timelines for states to adopt Central guidelines for vehicle aggregator registration and the approval of automated testing stations. These amendments seek to standardize regulations across the country and improve the efficiency of vehicle testing.

Stricter License Renewal Norms

The draft amendments introduce stricter requirements for driving license renewals, especially for those convicted of offenses like overspeeding and drunk driving. Individuals over 55 will also need to pass a driving test upon renewal.
