Major Changes at Amazon's Wondery Podcast Division
In a significant move to restructure its audio business, Amazon announced the layoff of approximately 110 employees from its Wondery podcast division. This decision comes alongside the departure of Wondery CEO Jen Sargent, marking a pivotal shift in the company's strategy to consolidate its podcasting operations under the Audible unit.
Strategic Realignment for Future Growth
Steve Boom, Amazon's VP of audio, Twitch, and games, emphasized the reorganization's goal to better align teams and capitalize on upcoming strategic opportunities. "These changes are designed to ensure we have the optimal structure to deliver the best possible experience," Boom stated in a memo to staff. As part of this realignment, Wondery's narrative podcasts will now be managed under Audible, with creator-led content transitioning to a newly established "creator services" unit.
Facing Competition in the Podcasting Arena
This restructuring occurs as Amazon's audio ventures encounter stiff competition, particularly from YouTube's expanding video podcast market. Wondery, renowned for its popular shows such as "Dirty John", "Dr. Death", and "Armchair Expert" with Dax Shepard, was acquired by Amazon nearly five years ago, signaling the tech giant's ambitious entry into the podcasting domain.
