India Firmly Denies Halting US Arms Negotiations Amid Rising Trade Tensions

India Denies Reports of Pausing US Arms Talks

India's Defence Ministry has categorically denied reports suggesting a halt in discussions regarding major arms purchases from the United States. Describing the claims as "false and fabricated," officials emphasized that procurement processes are proceeding "as per extant procedures."

Background of the Controversy

The denial comes in the wake of a Reuters report linking the alleged pause to recent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Indian goods. The report highlighted that planned acquisitions, including Stryker combat vehicles, Javelin missiles, and Boeing P8I aircraft, worth $3.6 billion, were expected to be announced during a now-cancelled visit by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Washington.

Impact of US Tariffs on Bilateral Relations

President Trump's decision on August 6 to increase tariffs on Indian exports to 50% has significantly strained trade relations between the two countries. Despite these challenges, India, which has traditionally relied on Russian arms but is increasingly turning to the US for military equipment, maintains that negotiations are on track.
