DGCA Challenges IndiGo Over Unapproved Pilot Training Simulators: A Safety Concern

DGCA's Show-Cause Notice to IndiGo

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo, alleging the use of unapproved simulators for training approximately 1,700 pilots. These pilots were being prepared for operations at challenging airfields like Calicut, Leh, and Kathmandu.

DGCA issues show cause notice to Indigo for using unapproved simulators for pilot training

Details of the Allegations

During a scrutiny of simulator training records, DGCA found that "Category C (critical) airfield training" was conducted using "non-qualified" simulators. The notice, issued on August 11, demands a response within 14 days, threatening "ex parte action" for non-compliance.

Understanding Category C Airfields

Category C airfields are known for their unusual challenges, located in mountainous regions such as Leh and Kathmandu, or the hilly south Malabar region like Calicut. These areas feature short, table-top runways and unique wind and atmospheric conditions, requiring specialized pilot training.

IndiGo's Response

IndiGo has acknowledged the receipt of the notice and stated, "We are in the process of reviewing the same and will respond to the regulator within the stipulated timeline. We remain committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance across our operations."

Regulatory Violations Cited

The notice highlights breaches of CAR Section-7, Series D, Part VI, Para 35.16(ii) and Operation Circular 15/2014, which outline the standards for flight crew training and simulator qualifications. These regulations ensure that training devices accurately replicate aircraft and airport-specific models for safe pilot training.
