Expanding Horizons in India
Top American specialty glass and technology company Corning is taking significant strides in India by deepening its partnership with local contract manufacturer Optiemus. Through a trademark and licensing agreement, the duo aims to cater to the burgeoning demand for screen protectors in the Indian market.

First Direct Supply from India
In a landmark move, Corning is on the verge of commencing production of finished cover glass for smartphones in India, marking the first time it will directly supply from the country. This initiative, part of a Rs 1,000-crore joint venture with Optiemus, is expected to start production by December this year, serving major smartphone manufacturers including Apple, Samsung, and Chinese brands.
Boosting Local Production
Ashok Gupta, chairman of Optiemus Infra, highlighted the plan to import glass sheets for processing in India under the Rhinotech brand, adhering to Corning's stringent quality standards. With the domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors projected to reach 400 million pieces annually, this partnership is poised to significantly reduce reliance on imports from China and Vietnam.
Quality and Innovation at the Forefront
Sudhir Pillai, MD of Corning in India, emphasized the screen protectors will bear the 'Engineered by Corning' trademark, underscoring the commitment to quality and innovation. This collaboration is expected to bolster India's capacity in producing high-quality screen protectors, aligning with the government's push for higher production standards in the electronics industry.
Government's Role in Quality Assurance
The Indian government's concern over the import of low-quality tempered glass has led to the announcement of BIS standards for screen protectors. Implementing these standards is anticipated to enhance local production, ensuring the market's growth is both sustainable and quality-driven.
