Lockheed Martin to Elevate Poland's F-16 Fleet to Cutting-Edge Viper Configuration

Lockheed Martin Partners with Poland for F-16 Modernization

In a significant move to enhance its air defense capabilities, Poland has entered into a partnership with Lockheed Martin Corporation for the modernization of its 48 F-16 Block 52+ fighter jets. The upgrade will transform these aircraft into the advanced F-16 Viper configuration, with the project being a collaborative effort between Lockheed Martin and Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze No. 2 (WZL-2) in Poland.

Comprehensive Upgrade Package

The modernization package is comprehensive, featuring the APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array Scalable Agile Beam radar, a new mission computer, advanced helmet systems, and electronic warfare improvements. Additionally, structural modifications will extend the service life of the jets to 12,000 flight hours. The plan also includes upgrades to simulators to ensure pilots are fully prepared for the enhanced capabilities of their aircraft.

Strategic Benefits and NATO Alignment

Nick Smythe, vice president of Sustainment Campaign Strategies and Business Development at Lockheed Martin, highlighted that these upgrades will ensure Poland's F-16 fleet remains interoperable with 5th Generation platforms like the F-35 and fully aligned with NATO missions. This modernization effort underscores the strategic partnership between Poland and the United States, as evidenced by the recent signing of a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) between Poland's Ministry of National Defense and the U.S. government.
