Google slapped with €325M fine by French regulator over Gmail ads and cookie violations

Major Privacy Penalty for Google

France's privacy watchdog CNIL has imposed a €325 million fine on Google for displaying ads between Gmail users' emails without their consent and for depositing cookies during Google account creation without proper authorization.

Compliance Deadline and Penalties

CNIL issued an injunction requiring Google to implement corrective measures within 6 months, with a potential daily penalty of €100,000 for each day of non-compliance if the company fails to meet the deadline.

Shein Also Fined in Separate Action

In a related announcement, the regulator also fined fashion platform Shein €150 million for cookie regulation violations, including depositing trackers without user consent, not respecting user choices, and failing to provide adequate information to internet users.
