EU's Major Investment in Defense Sector
The European Commission has made a groundbreaking announcement, pledging €910 million through the 2024 European Defence Fund (EDF) to modernize and enhance Europe's defense industry. This strategic move aims to address critical capability gaps and foster innovation in defense technologies.
Collaborative Projects and SME Involvement
With a focus on cutting-edge technologies such as AI-driven drones and stealth systems, this year's EDF funding marks a historic inclusion of Ukrainian defense industries in collaborative projects. The initiative has attracted 299 proposals from 25 member states and Norway, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) securing over 27% of the allocated funds.
Strengthening Europe's Defense Capabilities
"The selected projects are pivotal in developing essential capabilities like air and missile defense systems and unmanned aerial vehicles," stated Andrius Kubilius, Commissioner for Defence and Space. He emphasized that these advancements will empower European armed forces to counteract emerging threats and safeguard citizens, reinforcing collective defense and supporting allies such as Ukraine.
