US Eases Auto Tariffs, Mexico Sees Progress
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised the United States' decision to relax auto tariffs, describing it as a significant improvement over the initial harsh measures. This adjustment addresses the issue of double taxation faced by exporters, who were previously taxed on both vehicles and materials like steel and aluminum.
USMCA Recognized in Tariff Adjustments
Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of recognizing auto parts produced across North America for tariff discounts, viewing it as a nod to the USMCA trade agreement. While celebrating this development, she mentioned that certain aspects, including a proposed two-year reimbursement plan for automakers, are still under discussion.
Ongoing Dialogue Between Nations
The President emphasized the continuous and productive dialogue between the US and Mexican trade teams. This comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump's executive orders aimed at providing short-term support to the auto industry during a transitional period.
