US Eases Auto Tariffs: A Positive Step for North American Trade, Says Mexican President

US Decision on Auto Tariffs Welcomed by Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has praised the United States' recent decision to ease auto tariffs, describing it as "a step forward" from the initially imposed rates. This move addresses the issue of double charging on vehicles and materials like steel and aluminum, a problem rectified in the latest executive orders.

Recognition of North American Auto Parts

Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of recognizing auto parts produced across North America for tariff discounts, viewing it as a gesture of respect towards the USMCA trade deal. She also mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding two additional points in the agreement, including a planned reimbursement to automakers over a two-year period.

Ongoing Dialogue Between US and Mexico

The Mexican President emphasized the active and continuous dialogue between the trade teams of both countries. Her comments came in response to US President Donald Trump’s executive orders aimed at providing short-term support during a transitional phase by relaxing the 25% auto tariffs.
