US Eases Auto Tariffs, Sheinbaum Sees Progress
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her approval of the United States' decision to relax auto tariffs, describing it as a significant step forward from the initial harsh measures. "This adjustment addresses the double taxation issue faced by some exporters," Sheinbaum noted, highlighting the correction of charges on both vehicles and materials like steel and aluminum in the recent executive orders.
USMCA Trade Deal Acknowledged
Sheinbaum also welcomed the US's recognition of auto parts manufactured across North America for tariff reductions, viewing it as a gesture of respect towards the USMCA trade agreement. "This move underscores the importance of our trade relationship," she stated, while mentioning that discussions on additional agreement points, including a proposed two-year reimbursement plan for automakers, are still underway.
Ongoing Dialogue Between Nations
The Mexican president emphasized the continuous and active dialogue between US and Mexican trade teams, signaling a positive outlook for future negotiations. This development follows US President Donald Trump's executive orders aimed at providing short-term support to the auto industry during a transitional period.
