Skyrocketing Avocado Prices Hit 5-Year Peak Amidst Supply Shortages and Weather Woes

High Demand Meets Low Supply

In the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, farmer Hien anticipates a significant profit from her avocado sales this year, expecting to earn VND100 million, a 60% increase. This comes as avocado prices in HCMC have surged, surpassing those of mangoes, oranges, and grapefruits.

Weather and Crop Shifts Blamed for Shortage

Hoang Anh, a fruit store owner in HCMC, reports a 50% drop in supply compared to last year, attributing it to low yields. Dang Minh Tien, an avocado trader, points to unfavorable weather conditions and farmers switching to more profitable crops like durian and coffee as key factors behind the shortage.

Quality Assurance in High Demand

MM Mega Market is responding to consumer concerns by labeling high-quality, chemical-free avocados with a green sticker. Meanwhile, Lam Dong Province's agricultural authorities note a decrease in avocado cultivation areas, with only 8,000 hectares remaining, producing 80,000 tons annually.
