April Sees Dramatic 62% Drop in US Job Cuts to 105,441, Technology Sector Hit Hardest

Significant Reduction in Job Cuts Across the US

In a surprising turn of events, the United States witnessed a significant 62% decrease in job cuts this April, with the total number dropping to 105,441 from March's 275,240, as reported by Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. This figure also marks a 63% increase compared to the same period last year.

Sector-Specific Impacts

The technology sector faced the brunt of these cuts, with 27,021 jobs eliminated. Following closely were the media and news industries, which saw 8,091 cuts, and the healthcare sector, with 7,654 positions terminated. Notably, the government sector has been aggressively reducing its workforce, attributing 281,452 of its 282,227 cuts this year to DOGE-related cost-saving measures—a staggering 680% rise from the first quarter of 2024.

Expert Insights

Andrew Challenger, the company's Senior Vice President, highlighted the widespread nature of these cuts, stating, "Though the Government cuts are front and center, we saw job cuts across sectors last month. Generally, companies are citing the economy and new technology. Employers are slow to hire and limiting hiring plans as they wait and see what will happen with trade, supply chain, and consumer spending."
