Switzerland's Unemployment Rate Holds Steady at 2.8% in April Amid Economic Shifts

Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Switzerland remained steady at 2.8% in April, as reported by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) on Tuesday. This figure mirrors the rate recorded in March, indicating a period of stability in the job market.

Rise in Unemployed Numbers

Despite the unchanged rate, the number of unemployed individuals saw an increase, with 130,223 people out of work. This represents a rise of 1,849 people, or 1.4%, from the previous month. When compared to April 2024, the surge is even more pronounced, with an additional 23,144 people unemployed, marking a 21.6% increase.

Youth Unemployment Shows Slight Improvement

On a brighter note, the youth unemployment rate experienced a minor decline, dropping by 0.1 percentage points to 2.5%. This equates to 11,118 young individuals seeking employment, showcasing a slight recovery in this demographic.

Job Availability Declines

The landscape for job seekers became slightly more challenging in April, with the number of available jobs decreasing by 1,643 from March to a total of 40,887. This dip suggests a tightening in the job market, potentially impacting future unemployment figures.
