German Services Sector Contracts in April Amid Economic Uncertainty, PMI Hits 14-Month Low

German Services Sector Faces Contraction

The German services sector has unexpectedly slipped back into contraction this April, with the Services PMI Business Activity Index dropping to 49.0 from 50.9 in March. This marks the first time the index has fallen below the critical 50.0 threshold since November, reaching a 14-month low, according to a recent report by S&P Global and Hamburg Commercial Bank.

Composite PMI Shows Slight Growth

Despite the downturn in the services sector, Germany's Composite PMI Output Index managed to stay just above the recession line at 50.1, down from 51.3 in March. This slight growth is attributed to manufacturing companies increasing their production, continuing a recovery trend that began in March after nearly two years of decline.

Economic and Political Uncertainty Looms

The report highlights weaker demand and ongoing economic and political uncertainties as key factors behind the slowdown. Dr. Cyrus de la Rubia, Chief Economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank, commented on the situation, noting, "The German service sector has hit the brakes. At first glance, the future doesn't look too bright."
