German Business Activity Faces Setback in April as Services Sector Contracts

German Services Sector Contracts in April

The German services sector experienced a contraction in April, with the Services PMI Business Activity Index dropping to 49.0 from 50.9 in March. This marks the first time the index has fallen below the 50.0 threshold since November, reaching a 14-month low, according to a report by S&P Global and Hamburg Commercial Bank.

Composite PMI Output Index Shows Slight Growth

Despite the downturn in the services sector, Germany's Composite PMI Output Index remained slightly above the contraction threshold at 50.1, down from 51.3 in March. The report attributes the overall economic slowdown to weaker demand and heightened economic and political uncertainties.

Expert Analysis on the Economic Outlook

"The German service sector has hit the brakes," stated Dr. Cyrus de la Rubia, Chief Economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank. He noted that while the composite PMI avoided recession territory due to increased production in manufacturing, the future outlook appears uncertain.
