Canada's Unemployment Rate Increases

Statistics Canada reported on Friday that the unemployment rate in Canada rose to 6.9% in April, marking a 0.2 percentage point increase from March's 6.7%.

Employment Trends in April

Employment levels remained relatively stable in April, with the employment rate experiencing a slight decline of 0.1 percentage points to 60.8%. Notable shifts included a decrease in employment among core-aged women (25 to 54 years old), while there was growth in employment for individuals aged 55 and older and core-aged men.

Sector-Specific Changes

The manufacturing, wholesale, and retail sectors saw a reduction in employment. Conversely, the public administration, finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing sectors experienced growth.

Hours Worked and Wage Growth

Total hours worked increased by 0.4% month over month and 0.9% year over year. Additionally, average hourly wages saw a 3.4% increase on an annual basis.
