Tupai King: Malaysia's Newest and Priciest Durian Variety Captivates Global Gourmets

The Rise of Tupai King

Dubbed "the aristocrat of durians," the Tupai King is making waves in Malaysia's durian scene, commanding prices up to RM130 (US$30.25) per kilogram. This premium variety, despite being around for five or six years, has only recently caught the attention of durian aficionados worldwide.

A Unique Taste and Appearance

What sets the Tupai King apart is its distinct slim, egg-shaped appearance and the method of opening it from the top. Its flesh, greenish with a blue-black hue, offers a flavor that's more bitter than sweet, with a hint of alcohol, differentiating it from the popular Musang King.

Growing Demand Meets Limited Supply

Despite its surging popularity, the supply of Tupai King remains limited. Eric Yeap, a prominent durian grower in Penang, notes that it will take another three to four years before this variety can be produced on a commercial scale. The challenge is compounded by unpredictable weather conditions affecting yields.

The Future of Tupai King

With fans from Singapore and China eagerly seeking out Tupai King, the future looks promising for this exotic fruit. However, farmers face the dual challenge of expanding cultivation while adapting to climate changes that threaten durian production.
