Record-Breaking April for Passenger Vehicle Sales in India as Two-Wheelers Face Unexpected Decline

Passenger Vehicle Sales Hit Historic High in April

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), passenger vehicle dispatches in India achieved a remarkable 4% year-on-year growth in April, marking the highest monthly growth for the month. A total of 3,48,847 units were dispatched from factories to dealerships, up from 3,35,629 units in April 2024.

Passenger vehicle sales reach all-time April high, two-wheelers struggle

"The Passenger vehicles segment posted its highest-ever sales of April in 2025 of 3.49 lakh units, with a growth of 3.9 per cent as compared with April 2024," said SIAM director general Rajesh Menon.

Two-Wheelers Experience Sharp Decline

In stark contrast, two-wheeler sales, including bikes, scooters, and mopeds, saw a significant 17% drop year-on-year. Dispatches fell to 14,58,784 units in April from 17,51,393 units a year earlier. Scooter sales declined by 6%, motorcycle dispatches dropped by 23%, and moped wholesales fell by 8%.

Menon attributed the decline to a high base effect in April 2024 but remained optimistic about the segment's recovery in the coming months.

Steady Sales for Three-Wheelers

Three-wheeler sales remained relatively stable, with a marginal decline to 49,441 units last month.

Transition to Stricter Emissions Norms

Menon highlighted the industry's smooth transition to stricter emissions norms, with the second stage of on-board diagnostics (OBD 2) for two- and three-wheelers effective from April 2025. Manufacturers have also begun rolling out E20-compliant petrol vehicles designed to run on a 20% ethanol blend across the country this month.
