Trump Unveils Plan for Global Tariff Notifications
In a significant move that marks a shift in U.S. trade policy, President Donald Trump announced that letters detailing new tariff rates for goods exported to the United States will be dispatched to all trading partners starting July 4. This announcement was made during a press briefing at Andrews Air Force Base on July 3, 2025.

Streamlining Trade Negotiations
Trump emphasized the complexity of negotiating individual trade deals with over 170 countries, stating, "We have more than 170 countries, and how many deals can you make? They're very much more complicated." Instead, the administration will adopt a unilateral approach, notifying countries of tariff rates via letters, which Trump believes will simplify the process.
Future Trade Agreements on the Horizon
Aside from the recent trade accord with Vietnam, Trump hinted at finalizing additional agreements with other nations. However, for those without a deal, the White House is prepared to specify the tariff levels they will encounter, reinforcing the president's preference for direct notification over lengthy negotiations.
Reflecting on this strategy, Trump remarked on June 29, "We don’t need meetings. We have all the numbers. Sending the letters will be the end of the trade negotiation."
