Malaysia's Durian Prices Set to Plummet This Month Amid Peak Harvest Season

Peak Harvest Season Brings More Variety and Lower Prices

This year's durian harvest in Malaysia is expected to reach its peak within this and next month, leading to an abundance of supply and a significant drop in prices. Kuala Lumpur-based vendor Muhd Khairul, with over eight years in the trade, notes an early surge in customers, particularly for the sought-after Udang Merah and IOI durian varieties.

Varieties and Prices Attract Crowds

Street stalls across the city are bustling with activity, offering a range of durian varieties including Musang King, IOI, D24, Kampung, and Udang Merah. Musang King, in particular, has emerged as the top seller. Despite current high prices, expectations are set for a decrease as the peak season progresses.

Customer Satisfaction on the Rise

Customers like Shahidatul Nadia, 36, express satisfaction with the increased variety and more reasonable prices this year. The durian harvest season, running from May to August, not only delights local consumers but also plays a significant role in Malaysia's export economy, especially to China, the world's largest durian market.

Export Goals and Economic Impact

Following last year's successful export of $212 million worth of durians to China, Malaysia aims to boost its exports by 15-20% this year, further cementing its position in the global durian market.
