France Launches Criminal Investigation Into X Over Alleged Algorithm Manipulation and Foreign Interference

France Investigates X for Alleged Algorithm Manipulation

French prosecutors have initiated a criminal investigation into the social media platform X, along with its management, following suspicions of algorithm manipulation aimed at foreign interference. Magistrate Laure Beccuau announced the probe in a statement this Friday.

Reports Triggering the Investigation

The investigation is grounded on two significant reports. The first comes from National Assembly Deputy Eric Bothorel, who highlighted a "lack of clarity" regarding changes to X's algorithm post its acquisition by billionaire Elon Musk. Bothorel also pointed fingers at Musk for "personal interventions" in the platform's management.

The second report, allegedly from a French cybersecurity official, suggests that the algorithm modifications were designed to "bias democratic debate" within France, raising concerns over the integrity of digital platforms in democratic processes.
