Government Launches Incentive Scheme for Electric Trucks
The Indian government has introduced a groundbreaking incentive scheme under the PM E-DRIVE initiative, offering up to Rs 9.6 lakh per electric truck. This move aims to revolutionize the freight mobility sector towards sustainability.

Targeting Key Industries for a Greener Future
With a focus on ports, logistics, steel, and cement industries, the scheme is set to support the adoption of up to 5,600 electric trucks. Union minister H D Kumaraswamy highlighted the significant environmental impact of diesel trucks, which account for 42% of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions despite being only 3% of the vehicle population.
Incentives and Requirements
The incentives vary based on the gross vehicle weight, with the highest support at Rs 9.6 lakh. Buyers will receive an upfront discount, and OEMs will be reimbursed via the PM E-DRIVE portal. A mandatory scrapping of old polluting trucks is required to avail benefits.
Advancing Make in India and Green Jobs
This initiative not only aims to reduce logistics costs and promote localisation but also to create green jobs across the EV and battery ecosystem. SAIL has pledged to procure 150 e-trucks over two years, aiming for at least 15% of hired vehicles to be electric.
Focus on Delhi's Air Quality
Approximately Rs 100 crore has been allocated to support around 1,100 e-trucks in Delhi, addressing the city's air quality concerns. Several OEMs have already started electric truck production in India, marking a significant step towards sustainable freight mobility.
