EU Extends Suspension of Countermeasures
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday that the European Union will extend its suspension of countermeasures to US tariffs until early August. This decision comes as the initial suspension period, targeting $24.6 billion worth of aluminum and steel in US goods, was set to expire on Monday.
Seeking a Negotiated Solution
"We are committed to finding a negotiated solution with America, but we are also preparing for all possible alternatives," von der Leyen stated during her meeting with President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels.
Trump's Tariff Threat
Following unsuccessful weeks of talks with major US trading partners, President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from the EU and Mexico, effective August 1. This move is separate from existing sector-specific duties.
