India's Defense Leap: Netra MkII AWACS Project to Revolutionize IAF's Surveillance with Rs 20,000 Crore Investment

India's Next-Gen Airborne Warning Systems

The Indian government has greenlit a monumental Rs 20,000 crore AWACS project, marking a significant advancement in the Indian Air Force's (IAF) surveillance and early warning capabilities. This initiative, known as the Netra MkII, aims to develop indigenous airborne early warning and control systems (AEW&C), placing India among the elite nations with advanced military radar technology.

Collaborative Efforts and Technological Integration

Spearheaded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the project will see collaboration with Indian companies and Airbus. Notably, the systems will be installed on Airbus A321 aircraft, a first for such a role, traditionally dominated by Boeing. These aircraft will undergo significant modifications, including the addition of a dorsal radar fin for 360-degree coverage.

Future Prospects and Current Capabilities

With an expected completion in three years, the project will feature fully indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars and mission control systems. The IAF's current fleet includes smaller Netra early warning aircraft and three IL76-based Phalcon systems, highlighting the strategic importance of this upgrade. The Awacs India project not only enhances national defense but also opens doors for future exports in high-end defense manufacturing.
