Malaysia Set to Introduce 3 Exciting New Durian Varieties, Expanding Its Rich Collection Beyond 200

New Durian Hybrids Under Testing

Datuk Dr. Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani, Mardi’s director-general, announced that the institute is currently testing several promising durian hybrids. These could potentially lead to the development of new clones, with assessments underway for their suitability across different planting locations, including Mardi Kuala Kangsar and Mardi Jerangau in Terengganu.

Rebranding and Export Potential

Mardi is also focusing on rebranding the MRDI Super 88 (MS88), a hybrid between D10 and D24 durians, known for its golden yellow, creamy texture and a flavor often compared to Musang King. With about 13,000 MS88 trees planted nationwide, Mardi anticipates broader commercial distribution in five to six years.

Malaysia's Durian Diversity

Malaysia is home to over 200 durian varieties, each offering unique flavors. While Musang King remains a favorite, newer varieties like Tupai King are gaining popularity. The government is also promoting other varieties such as Black Thorn, Red Prawn, and Hajah Hasmah on the global stage.

Challenges and Opportunities

Changing weather patterns pose challenges to durian harvests, with unpredictable rains affecting yields. However, these changes have also led to an additional, smaller crop in January, offering a silver lining to farmers.
