Hong Kong Ranks 8th Globally as a Smart City, Surpassing Singapore and Seoul in Innovation

Hong Kong's Smart City Achievement

Hong Kong has made a significant leap in the global smart city rankings, securing the 8th position worldwide and 2nd in Asia, only behind Tokyo, according to the South China Morning Post. This achievement is highlighted in the ISUI Smart City Index 2025, a collaborative effort by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the International Society for Urban Informatics (ISUI).

What Makes Hong Kong Stand Out?

The city's excellence in environmental sustainability, digital economic development, and governance effectiveness contributed to its high ranking. Notably, Hong Kong's progress towards carbon neutrality and its advanced digital infrastructure were key factors.

Global and Regional Rankings

Other Asian cities like Seoul, Beijing, and Singapore also performed well but were outpaced by Hong Kong. Globally, Stockholm led the index, with Washington, D.C., Barcelona, and London following closely.

Future Implications

Professor John Shi, ISUI president, emphasized the positive trajectory of Hong Kong's smart city development, suggesting that these findings could influence future policies, such as expanding cycling paths and electric vehicle charging stations.
