Air India Halts Delhi-Washington Direct Flights Due to Aircraft Shortage Starting September 1

Air India Announces Suspension of Nonstop Delhi-Washington Flights

Due to a critical shortage of wide-body aircraft, Air India will suspend its nonstop flights between Delhi and Washington starting September 1, 2025. This decision comes as part of the airline's extensive fleet retrofit program aimed at enhancing passenger experience.

Impact on Passengers and Alternative Arrangements

Passengers with bookings beyond the suspension date will be offered alternatives, including rebooking on other flights or full refunds. Air India assures that customers can still reach Washington via one-stop flights through its interline partners.

Behind the Decision: Fleet Retrofit and Operational Challenges

The suspension is primarily due to the retrofit of 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which will be unavailable until at least the end of 2026. Additional challenges include the closure of Pakistani airspace, affecting flight routes and operational efficiency.

Future Plans and Fleet Upgrade

Air India is committed to upgrading its fleet with new interiors, advanced inflight entertainment, and more, aiming for completion by October 2028. The airline also plans to retrofit 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft starting early 2027.
