Penang's Durian Kampung Aims for Global Spotlight with New Varieties Registration

Penang's Durian Kampung Rivals Premium Hybrids in Taste

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the exceptional taste of Penang's durian kampung, comparing it favorably to the state's premium hybrid varieties. "We have many high-quality durian kampung that deserve global recognition," he stated, urging producers to register their varieties.

Expanding Penang's Durian Portfolio

With the recent registration of two new hybrid varieties, Tupai King (D214) and Cenderawasih, Penang now boasts over 200 registered durian varieties. "Our goal is to further expand this list and promote Penang durians worldwide," Chow added.

Global Markets in Sight

Penang is not just targeting traditional markets like China and Singapore but is also exploring new opportunities in India, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. This strategic move is expected to enhance the agricultural sector and benefit rural economies.

Penang: A Hub for Premium Durians

Balik Pulau, a town in Penang, is renowned for its durian orchards producing top-tier varieties such as Black Thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (Red Prawn). Last year's export of 67,203 kilograms of durians, with Musang King and Black Thorn leading the demand, underscores Penang's growing influence in the global durian market.
