India Engages in Crucial Trade Talks with the US
Commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal revealed that the Indian government is actively discussing a bilateral trade deal with the US, with negotiations occurring at various levels. The status of an upcoming American delegation's visit for further talks on August 25 remains under watch, especially after recent tariff impositions by the US.

Navigating Through US Tariffs and Strengthening Export Strategies
Following President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian exports, set to double as a penalty for dealings with Russia, India is not standing still. The government has introduced a comprehensive four-pronged strategy aimed at diversifying markets for exports and imports, enhancing export competitiveness, and bolstering export promotion efforts.
Expanding Trade Agreements and Maximizing Benefits
A pivotal aspect of India's plan involves forging more trade agreements to secure better market access and fully utilize existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). For example, the India-Australia ECTA currently sees an 85% utilization rate of concessions, with ambitions to reach 100%.
Targeted Approaches for Export and Import Diversification
The government is also focusing on 50 key countries that account for 90% of India's exports, implementing tailored strategies to broaden export destinations. Similarly, initiatives are underway to diversify import sources, including agricultural products, through agencies like Apeda.
Despite challenges posed by US tariffs, officials remain optimistic about the potential for export diversification and the resilience of India's trade strategies.
