Eurozone and EU Retail Sales Dip Slightly in March, With Varied Performance Across Sectors

In March, the Eurozone and the European Union experienced a slight decrease in retail trade, both recording a 0.1% drop from the previous month, according to Eurostat's latest report. Despite this monthly dip, the year-on-year comparison shows a positive trend, with the euro area seeing a 1.5% increase and the EU a 1.4% rise.

Sector-Specific Performance

The retail sales volumes for food, drinks, and tobacco saw a marginal decrease of 0.1% in the euro area and a 0.4% drop in the EU. Non-food products also faced a slight decline of 0.1% in the Eurozone, while the EU witnessed a modest 0.1% increase. Conversely, automotive fuel sales in specialized stores enjoyed a 0.4% uplift in both regions.

Country Highlights

Slovenia, Estonia, and Slovakia were among the countries with the most significant month-on-month retail sales decreases, with Slovenia leading at a 2% drop. On the brighter side, Malta, Belgium, and Croatia showcased remarkable growth, with Malta topping the list at a 2% increase.
