Enhanced Customs Services for Thai Durian Imports
Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat expressed gratitude towards the General Administration of Customs of China for their round-the-clock efforts to facilitate the import of Thai durians. This initiative aims to ensure the smooth entry of Thailand's durian exports into China, the largest global market for the fruit.
Increased Safety Measures
In response to past issues with Basic Yellow 2 dye contamination, Chinese authorities have expanded their laboratory facilities at border checkpoints. This dye, known for its carcinogenic properties, has led to the rejection of several durian shipments in the past.
Thailand's Commitment to Quality
Thailand is proactively enhancing its durian screening processes with nine operational laboratories and is in the process of gaining approval for a tenth. This move is part of Thailand's strategy to maintain its position as the leading durian supplier to China, especially during the harvest season from May to August.
Economic Impact
With 98% of Thailand's durian exports destined for China, valued at approximately $4 billion last year, the partnership between the two countries is crucial for Thailand's agricultural sector.
