SPC Group Implements Strict Eight-Hour Night Overtime Limit Following Fatal Accidents

SPC Group Takes Action Against Excessive Night-Shift Work

In a bold move to address workplace safety, SPC Group has announced a new policy limiting night-shift overtime for production workers to eight hours. This decision comes in the wake of tragic accidents and direct criticism from President Lee Jae-myung regarding the dangers of prolonged night labor.

Comprehensive Overhaul of Production System

The SPC Committee, the company's executive body, held an emergency meeting on July 27 to outline a full-scale revamp of its production system. "To eliminate overtime exceeding eight hours, we will expand staffing, adjust production items and volumes, and reorganize production lines," stated an SPC representative. The policy is set to take effect on October 1.

President Lee's Site Visit Highlights Concerns

President Lee's recent visit to the SPC Samlip Sihwa Plant underscored the risks associated with current shift schedules. Noting the high labor intensity and early morning fatal accidents, Lee questioned the feasibility of 12-hour night shifts. In response, SPC Group plans to reduce factory operating hours and gradually shorten daytime shifts to mitigate fatigue and accident risks.

Commitment to Worker Safety

"We are deeply committed to reforming work structures and production systems to prioritize worker safety," an SPC Group representative emphasized. The company will also engage in continuous dialogue with labor unions and provide necessary training to ensure a smooth transition to the new work system.
