Malaysia Investigates Viral Incident: Singapore Luxury Car Caught Using Subsidized Fuel Reserved for Locals

Investigation Underway

Authorities in Malaysia are currently investigating a viral image that shows a Singapore-registered luxury car refueling with RON95, a subsidized fuel strictly reserved for Malaysian nationals. The incident, which took place in Johor Bahru, has sparked widespread attention and concern.

Details of the Incident

The photo, widely circulated online, not only shows the luxury vehicle being refueled with RON95 but also allegedly depicts the fuel being pumped into a large plastic bottle at a station in Iskandar Puteri. RON95 is subsidized by the Malaysian government and is significantly cheaper than other fuel grades available to foreigners.

Legal Implications

Under Malaysian law, foreign-registered vehicles are prohibited from purchasing RON95, with violators facing severe penalties. Petrol station operators found selling RON95 to foreign vehicles may be fined up to RM1 million or imprisoned for up to three years.

Authorities' Response

Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, director of the Johor branch of Malaysia’s Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, emphasized the importance of adhering to government directives and warned all petrol station operators to comply strictly with the regulations.

Call for Public Assistance

Authorities have urged the public to assist in the investigation by reporting any illegal sales of subsidized fuel to foreign vehicles, highlighting the community's role in enforcing the law.
