August Sees a Sharp Decline in US Consumer Confidence Amid Rising Inflation Concerns

Consumer Sentiment Takes a Hit

The preliminary report from the University of Michigan revealed a 5% drop in the Consumer Sentiment Index for August, settling at 58.6. This marks a significant 13.7% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Economic Conditions Worsen

The Current Economic Conditions Index experienced a sharp 10.4% monthly decline and a slight 0.7% annual decrease, ending at 60.9 points. Meanwhile, the Index of Consumer Expectations saw a modest 0.9% monthly drop but a drastic 20.7% annual fall, landing at 57.2.

Inflation Expectations on the Rise

"Year-ahead inflation expectations have climbed from 4.5% in July to 4.9% in August, affecting various demographic groups and all political affiliations. Long-run inflation expectations also increased from 3.4% to 3.9%," the report highlighted.
